Cellar Songs

Candás, Carreño

Cellar songs are named after the canneries, which were locally known as cellars.

Female staff would sing these songs at work encouraged by their bosses, as a way of preventing them from eating the fish. This group, led by former cannery worker María Esther Vega, aims to preserve this tradition that was disappearing after the factories closed down.
