Ethnographic Museum

San Salvador, Quirós

Inaugurated in october 2010, the Ethnographic Museum of Quirós is located on the place once occupied by a steel complex started up in the 1860s by the Sociedad Hullera de Quirós. Until the facilities were finally abandoned in 1910, several companies tried to move forward with a project that had to struggle with the difficulties of the location, poor communications and competitors from the large steel companies in the region.

The museum proposes an approach to the history of this complex and its surroundings, distributing the contents in two thematic blocks. The first one, called Quirós industrial, proposes a journey through the industrial history of the council, the arrival of businessmen willing to exploit the coal and iron deposits in the area, the opening of new communication routes (roads and railroads), the start-up of the factory and its evolution until the end of the activity. Visitors will be able to see the preserved remains, such as the imposing retaining walls and the base of one of the blast furnaces, as well as the subway galleries.

The second block, called Quirós Campesino, recreates the traditional ways of life through a tour around the three floors of the peasant house. It shows the daily life of families, the trades, the traditions and the communitarian way of life. The rest of the constructions included in the itinerary represent common examples of the Asturian rural world: the hórreo (granary), the fountain, the washing place, the trough and the school.

Apart from the visit, the museum offers other services such as workshops, traditional games or temporary exhibitions.

The Museum of Quirós is part of the Network of Ethnographic Museums of Asturias, created in 2001. Its mission is to coordinate the collection management, dissemination, research and training tasks in museums of this kind in Asturias.
