La Arena, located on the right bank of the Nalón river, developed for centuries an important fishing and canning activity. Even today, it is the fishing port where the largest quantity of elver is auctioned in Asturias.
This auction is held in the fish market, a building that dates back to 1918. Its construction was promoted by the Sociedad de Pescadores El Progreso Marino de San Juan de la Arena, created a year earlier. Shipowners, sailors, skippers and manufacturers participated in this society with the sole objective of building this space. Nowadays, the Cofradía de Pescadores de San Juan Bautista is in charge of the management and administration of this service.
The striking building is composed of two structures of similar height but different widths, both topped by a stepped pediment, a typical feature of Nordic architecture. It also has a graceful arcaded space on the first floor.
